Meowth (ニャース, Nyarth) is a creature in the Pokémon media franchise.

Origin[edit]

Meowth's official artwork from Pokémon Red and Blue.

Meowth is a Normal-type Pokémon introduced in Generation I, and is categorized within the Pokédex at #052 as the "Scratch Cat Pokémon". It evolves into Persian starting at level 28. It and its evolution received Alolan Forms in Generation VII. It also received a Galarian Form in Generation VIII, in which it evolves into Perrserker instead. In Pokémon Sword and Shield, a special pre-order Meowth can transform into its Gigantamax form, during which it can use the move G-Max Gold Rush. It is easily recognized by the coin on its forehead and is known to collect similar shiny objects. It is especially notable among the general public for being a part of the Team Rocket trio in the Pokémon anime series along with Jessie and James, appearing in almost all of its episodes for the first 25 seasons. In the National Pokédex, it is registered as #052.

Pay Day is a Normal-type move introduced in Generation I. It has 40 base power, 100% accuracy and the unique property of producing money which can be picked up after each battle. It was originally Meowth's signature move, meaning it was that only Pokémon able to learn it by level, along with Persian, prior to Generation IV.

In Super Smash Bros.[edit]

Based on its prominent role in the Pokémon anime series, which was extremely popular at the time of the original game's release, a popular rumor claims Meowth was planned to be playable in the game along with Bowser, King Dedede, Mewtwo, and many other characters, before being cut for space/time constraints. However, unlike the aforementioned three characters, no definitive official source has ever been found that proves Meowth was ever planned to be included as a playable character.

As a Poké Ball Pokémon[edit]

Meowth can be summoned by a Poké Ball. It uses Pay Day as its attack: Meowth hovers in the place it was summoned, scattering coins in all directions. Opponents hit by the coins will take 6% damage. When the coins hit characters, they also make Mario-coin sounds. The attack radius of Pay Day is short so it can be easy to avoid, however, fighters can become trapped in the barrage of coins taking up to 50% damage. Meowth can also deal 12% damage with its body, which has much higher knockback scaling, so it may KO foes after they are hit with the coins.

Meowth has a spawn chance of 1/12.

In Super Smash Bros. Melee[edit]

Trophy[edit]

Meowth does not return in Super Smash Bros. Melee, only making a cameo as a trophy. Meowth's trophy is unlocked after getting the "Smash Blue" trophies (from All-Star Mode) for all 26 playable characters. This is the only game where Meowth isn't a Poké Ball Pokémon.

Meowth's trophy is atypical with respect to other Pokémon trophies. Instead of describing its behaviour in the Pokémon series, the trophy instead references Meowth's Party, an ending animation for the Pokémon anime. Meowth is seen holding his guitar from the animation, and the description references the Japanese lyrics to its accompanying song. This animation was also used as the basis for a technical demo used to demonstrate the GameCube's technology at Nintendo's SpaceWorld 2001 event; the model used for the trophy appears to be the very same model from this tech demo.

This...is Meowth's dream. Meowth strides all over the globe, scattering invitations to other Pokémon, insisting they come to "Meowth's Party." At this wonderful party, guests are packed in like sardines as Meowth climbs up the stage with its faithful guitar. It strikes a chord, pauses, and then rocks their world!

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl[edit]

As a Poké Ball Pokémon[edit]

Meowth in Brawl.

Meowth returns to its role as a Poké Ball Pokémon in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, using the same attack it used in Super Smash Bros., but in a slightly different fashion. This time, Meowth throws a barrage of coins left or right in the opponent's direction instead of quickly scattering coins in all directions, though it will turn to face the opponent that is closest to it. The coins only deal 3% damage, but falling from above onto Meowth will cause the victim to be locked into the rush of coins and thus take heavy damage.

Meowth has a spawn chance of 30/586.

A Scratch Cat Pokémon. It's one of the most famous Pokémon and very fond of things that sparkle--the gold medallion on its head could be seen as an indicator of this infatuation. There are many Pokémon that resemble cats, but Meowth is the only one that can use Pay Day to receive coins at the end of battle. It evolves into Persian.

NTSC Meowth is a Normal-type, Scratch Cat Pokémon who absolutely loves anything shiny. It's a creature of the night, and it's not unusual to discover a Meowth and a Murkrow fighting over their finds. Meowth's attack Pay Day can deal a ton of damage if an opponent gets caught in it. How purrfect!

PAL Meowth, a Normal-type Pokémon, loves round, shiny things. It runs around at night, hunting for little treasures and trinkets, but often ends up getting into fights with Murkrow about who'll get to keep them. Watch out for Meowth's Pay Day attack. If it catches you from behind, it can be purralysingly pawerful!

Trivia[edit]

  • Meowth is the first of two Poké Ball Pokémon to skip an installment before returning, the other being Scizor.
  • Electrode, Meowth, Porygon2, and Unown are the only non-Legendary or Mythical Poké Ball Pokémon to have no spoken voice lines.
    • Ironically, despite its Team Rocket anime counterpart being well-known for its ability to talk, Meowth does not vocalize at all in Smash.
